Sathyu’s film in Indian Panorama at 40th IFFI

By Utpal Borpujari

“Ijjodu”, made after a 12 year hiatus by veteran M S Sathyu, will lead the charge from Karnataka in the Indian Panorama section of the 40th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) this year.

Apart from “Ijjodu”, the other films from Karnataka in the feature section of Indian Panorama at the festival to be held in Goa from November 23 are “Beli Matthu Hola” by P R Ramadasa Naidu, “Shankara Punyokoti” by G Murthy, and Tulu-language film “Gaggara” by Shivadhwaj Shetty.

The Panorama list has been announced after the Kerala High Court vacated a stay on announcement of the Panorama results, which it had put as an interim order earlier on the basis of a writ petition by director Renjith alleging step-motherly treatment towards Malayalam film industry in the selection process.

The awards got into a controversy also after media reports that jury chairman Muzaffar Ali and member Bobby Bedi had been absented for substantial periods during the selection process. Another controversy arose when another jury member, Gautaman Bhaskaran, allegedly released the whole feature film selection list on a website in contravention of jury rules.

The Panorama, which has 26 films, including five from a “mainstream quota” out of a pre-selected shortlist sent by Film Federation of India (FFI), will open with debutant filmmaker Laxmikant Shetgaonkar’s Konkani film “Paltadacho Munis (The Man Beyond the Bridge)”.

Incidentally, the announced list does not mention which five films are part of the “quota”, that was introduced last year after the Indian Mainstream section of IFFI was abolished.

The other films in the Panorama are “Aainaate” by Dulal Dey, “Angashumaner Chhobi” by Atanu Ghosh, “Antaheen” by Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury, “Dwando” by Suman Ghosh, “Janala”

The non-feature section of Indian Panorama, which will open with “In For Motion” (English) by Anirban Datta, has films like “Bilal” (Bengali & Hindi) by Sourav Sarangi, “Ekti Kaktaliya Golpo” by Tathagaba Sinha, “I’m the Very Beautiful” by Shyamal Kumar Karmakar (both Bengali), “The First Leap” by Haobam Pabankumar, “The Latent City” Krishnendu Bose, “The Prince and the Crown of Stones” by Gautam Benegal, “What If?” by V K Prakash (all English), “Boond” by Abhishek Pathak, “Chilika Banks” by Akanksha Joshi, “Kya Main Qafir Hoon” by Sandhin Flora (all Hindi), “Supermen of Malegaon” by Faiza Ahmad Khan (Hindi & Urdu), and “Swayambhu Sen Forsees His End” by Debashish Medhkar (Hindi, Malayalam, English).
