Sharmila, Uma Da Cunha in Cannes juries

By Utpal Borpujari

Noted actress and chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) Sharmila Tagore has been nominated as a member of the Competition Section of the 62nd Cannes Film Festival.

The festival made the announcement on Monday, completing the nine-member jury headed by legendary French actress Isabelle Huppert. Interestingly, the other eight jury members had been announced quite some time back.

The festival, in its announcement, noted that Tagore had started her career as a child in 1959, in auteur Satyajit Ray’s Apur Sansar in 1959, and that another Ray film starring her, Devi, was in the Cannes competition.

“Star of Hindi cinema, she works with both auteur filmmakers and popular films produced in Mumbai,”  the festival said in its announcemnet, adding that she is also the great-granddaughter of the Rabindranath Tagore.

Incidentally, all the three Indian jury members in Cannes this decade have been women. It was Aishwarya Rai in 2003 while in 2005, Nandita Das served in the jury.

In fact, India’s only contribution to the world’s biggest film festival in recent years have been jury members, and not films, as year after year, Indian films have failed to cut the ice with the selectors who choose films for the main sections of the festival.

The other members of this year’s jury are Italian actress-director Asia Argento, Turkish director-actor Nuri Bilge Ceylan, South Korean director Lee Chang-Dong American director-screenwriter James Gray, writer-screenwriter Hanif Kureishi from the UK, Taiwanese actress Shu Qi and American actress Robin Wright Penn.

Meanwhile, the prestigious Un Certain Regard section of the festival will have noted film critic and programmer Uma Da Cunha as a jury member.
